Winter in Vilnius brings snow, ice, slush and long dark evenings. Many couriers keep working through the season — bad weather is exactly when many people prefer to order in. Here is how to stay warm, safe and productive on an e-bike.
Dress for the whole shift
- Layers, not one thick jacket: a thermal base layer, a warm middle layer and a windproof, waterproof outer layer.
- Warm, windproof gloves: your fingers need to work the brakes and the phone. Kilun includes winter gloves with every rental.
- A thin hat or buff under the helmet and something to cover your neck.
- Waterproof shoes or overshoes — wet feet get cold very fast.
Take care of the batteries
- Cold reduces range, so plan for fewer kilometres per charge than in summer.
- Keep the batteries indoors when you are not riding and charge them at room temperature.
- After bringing a battery in from the frost, let it warm up before you start charging.
- Start every shift with both batteries full.

Ride for the conditions
- Brake earlier and more gently, and avoid hard braking in turns.
- Slow down on snow, ice, wet leaves, metal covers and road markings.
- Fat tyres help on snow and slush, but they will not stop you on ice.
- Keep a longer distance from cars and buses — they need more time to stop too.
Be visible
- In December it gets dark before 16:00 in Vilnius, so lights and a reflective vest are needed for most of the shift.
- Clean your lights and reflectors often — slush and dirt cover them quickly.
Look after the bike
- Wipe salt and slush off the bike after the shift, especially the chain and brakes.
- Check the brakes more often — winter dirt wears the pads faster.
- Keep the bike in a dry place when you can.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride an e-bike in snow?
Yes, carefully. Fat tyres give good grip on snow and slush. Ride slower, brake earlier and avoid ice whenever you can.
Does the cold damage the battery?
Cold mainly reduces range for a while. Problems usually come from charging a frozen battery or leaving it outside for a long time, so keep the batteries indoors and charge them warm.
